Al-Azhar Park is a verdant oasis in the heart of Cairo, offering a serene escape from the city's bustling streets. Spanning 30 hectares (74 acres), this beautifully landscaped park provides panoramic views of Cairo's historic skyline, including landmarks like the Citadel and Al-Azhar Mosque.
Established in 2005, Al-Azhar Park was a gift to Cairo from His Highness the Aga Khan, developed through the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. The site was previously a 500-year-old debris dump on Al-Darassa Hill. The transformation involved removing over 1.5 million cubic meters of rubble and integrating traditional Islamic garden designs, featuring formal terraces, water channels, and shaded pavilions. During excavation, a 12th-century Ayyubid wall was uncovered and restored, adding historical depth to the park.
Islamic Garden Design: The park showcases elements like bustan-style orchards, Fatimid archways, and Persian-inspired water features, reflecting Cairo's rich Islamic heritage.
Panoramic Views: Elevated areas provide stunning vistas of Cairo's skyline, including the Citadel and historic mosques.
Dining Options: Visitors can enjoy traditional Egyptian cuisine at the Lakeside Restaurant, which accommodates up to 300 guests.
Cultural Initiatives: The park is developing an Urban Plaza that will house the Museum of Historic Cairo, aiming to showcase the city's urban and architectural evolution. Wikipedia
